Winter Body
A series of double-exposure film photographs exploring the self through the lens of the natural and built environment
Exhibited as part of Distinct Impressions at COOP Gallery, April 2023
I shot this series of double exposures with black and white film, first shooting self portraits and then the branches of trees in winter, which have fascinated me during this season. I often think about place and environment, particularly in the past couple of years as I moved from California to Nashville. The changing seasons have captured my attention and imagination in this different landscape. Yet even with winter’s short, dark, cold days, this season has been full of joy and community for me. Thus it is serendipitous that the images I sought to create - silhouettes filled with the stark angles of tree branches - instead turned out to prominently feature rectangles of light; the windows appearing more distinctly than my own body. As I waded through winter, the light still managed to shine through. This aligns with my own personal belief that through whatever challenging seasons we find ourselves in, light and hope will persevere, in unexpected and surprising ways.
