Spontaneous Shapes

Four mobiles, nine paintings, and six drawings
Solo show, Santa Barbara, CA, 2019

The inspiration for this series began with single-line doodles I’ve been drawing in the margins of my notebooks. I decided to experiment with this method more formally, and thus created this body of work. The only guideline I set for myself was to start and end each line in the same place. I wanted to investigate how a simple line, drawn spontaneously and intuitively, can create an endless variety of new forms and shapes.

I particularly love Alexander Calder’s mobiles, an art form that transcends the divide between two- and three-dimensionality. His art has influenced the way I think about space, form, and movement, and in part inspired the mobiles I created.
